Sapphic Slow-burn romances

The Ultimate List of Sapphic Fake Relationship Romance Novels

Sapphic fake relationship romance novels

As an author and avid reader of sapphic romances, one of my favorite tropes are fake relationships. That’s probably why I’ve written five of them!

There’s just something fun and charming about watching two characters navigate their fake relationship. Usually, it’s not long before they get themselves into trouble as they try to convince everyone they’re deeply in love, while they’re actually perfect strangers. It’s hilarious to see them scramble to come up with elaborate relationship histories or try to improvise.

And then, of course, there’s the moment it starts to dawn on them that maybe their feelings for each other are not so fake after all.

For all the readers who might love a good fake dating novel as much as I do, I compiled a list of more than 100 sapphic fake relationship romance novels.

If I missed any, please feel free to let me know in the comments!

Just for Show by Jae

What happens when an overachieving psychologist with OCD tendencies and an impulsive, out-of-work actress start a fake relationship?

Claire Renshaw thought she had it all: a successful career as a couples therapist, a publishing contract for her self-help book, and a happy relationship. But her perfect world falls apart when her fiancée calls off their engagement. Because of that, even her book deal might be off the table. So Claire sets out to hire herself a fake fiancée.

Lana Henderson, the actress who shows up to audition for the role, is not exactly Claire’s ideal woman. Her frankness and the messes she leaves everywhere drive Claire up the wall. At least she won’t fall in love with someone like Lana.

But soon, Lana starts to win her over with her big heart, tickle fights, and—gasp!—carbs after six. The longer they pretend to be a love-struck couple, the less fake their kisses feel and the more the lines between reality and role begin to blur.

Once the book contract is signed, will they walk away or is their relationship no longer just for show?

Minimalist vlogger Ruby Hayashi has over a million followers who watch her meticulously edited takes on cooking, van living, and her cute rescue dog. She exists in a world of perfection that is getting boring and badly needs an injection of fresh energy.

When Coral and Ruby team up for a road trip to boost their audiences, it’s a clash of opposites in what could be the change they both need. As they hit the Oregon coast, what they don’t count on is how their enthralled followers start rooting for their favorite lesbians to get together.

Could faking a relationship for the cameras be the key to going viral and boosting their careers? But even if they make peace with lying to their fans, for how long will their hearts be able to tell the difference between fake flirtation and real love?

The only commitment Mara Antonini ever made was to her career on the Vegas stand-up scene. Putting romance on the back burner, she’s long accepted the role of ‘the player’ among her friends. She didn’t count on the stunning redhead representing a rival casino throwing her off her game.

D’Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding by Chencia C. Higgins

D’Vaughn and Kris have six weeks to plan their dream wedding.

Their whole relationship is fake.

Instant I Do could be Kris Zavala’s big break. She’s right on the cusp of really making it as an influencer, so a stint on reality TV is the perfect chance to elevate her brand. And $100,000 wouldn’t hurt, either.

D’Vaughn Miller is just trying to break out of her shell. She’s sort of neglected to come out to her mom for years, so a big splashy fake wedding is just the excuse she needs.

All they have to do is convince their friends and family they’re getting married in six weeks. If anyone guesses they’re not for real, they’re out. Selling their chemistry on camera is surprisingly easy, and it’s still there when no one else is watching, which is an unexpected bonus. Winning this competition is going to be a piece of wedding cake.

But each week of the competition brings new challenges, and soon the prize money’s not the only thing at stake. A reality show isn’t the best place to create a solid foundation, and their fake wedding might just derail their relationship before it even starts.

Never Mine by Bryce Oakley

Sage Carson has a messy reputation. Sure, she’s a soccer star with World Cup trophies and Olympic medals, but she’s almost as well known for her rebellious behavior off the pitch. She’s left enough gorgeous women with broken hearts in her dust to fill a roster. That was, until she got injured. Now, her frustratingly-slow recovery means she’d better secure this new squeaky-clean endorsement deal in order to get back on top.

Sweet, sunshiny Willa Bellamy has a crisis on her hands. She’s used to it — as an events coordinator for the Denver Zoo, it’s her job to handle crises. But when she receives an invite to her ex’s wedding, she’s not so sure it’ll be as easy to handle as an escaped emu during a Girl Scout sleepover. Even worse, when the bachelorette party invite mentions that couples are welcome, she realizes she’s the sole single person invited.

Fifteen years ago, Willa and Sage roamed the same halls of Edgelake High School. When their paths cross again, they decide to team up to solve both their problems — a stable, albeit fake, relationship to snag the endorsement deal and a hot soccer star to make the couples getaway sting a little less… But when the lines between real and fake start to blur, will they be able to keep the growing heat between them just a game or will they start playing to win?

Casting Lacey by Elle Spencer

Coming out is easier when you’ve got someone by your side. At least that’s how the hyper-private Quinn Kincaid sees it. When her publicist suggests a good old-fashioned sham of a Hollywood relationship, Quinn reluctantly agrees. And that’s how the star of Jordan’s Appeal, TV’s highest rated legal drama, ends up with a fake girlfriend—the very real, very sexy, and very gay soap star, Lacey Matthews.

Then one day a woman walks into the bookshop where I work. She’s got a sleeve of tattoos, an undercut, and a smile that makes me want to swoon. Overcome by her hotness, I blurt out a proposal: how would she like to come with me to a wedding and pretend to be my girlfriend?

Turns out Ezra Evans is new to Arrowbridge and she’ll do it, but not for free. We shake on it and then I have my very own fake girlfriend and no idea what to do with her. Ezra seems to have plenty of suggestions, many of which make me blush. Things between us heat up even before the wedding, and I can’t stop wondering if this relationship might be something real after all.

Allured by Her by Chelsea M. Cameron

I never looked forward to coming into work at the Common Grounds coffee shop and seeing Tenley Hill sitting at her usual table with her laptop. The most popular girl from high school always seemed to harass me and try to get a free latte and was more infuriatingly pretty than ever.

Then one day she comes in and she’s a total wreck. I make the massive mistake of asking her what’s wrong. Turns out her boyfriend dumped her and all wants to do is try and get him back. Tenley pours her heart out to me and, for the first time, I see her as a person and not just the woman who annoys me every day. That moment of weakness causes me to agree to do something I never would have done under normal circumstances: date her. Well, pretend to date her. In public, wherever her ex will see us. She tells me it’s fine, because she doesn’t even like women so there will be no messy complications. I panic and tell her I’m straight too.

At first I hate the role of being a fake girlfriend, but soon I find myself flirting with Tenley and dreaming of her kisses. She’s nothing like how I expected and before I know it, I’m falling for my heterosexual fake girlfriend and I have absolutely no idea what the hell I’m going to do about it.

From a young age, Cobie Galloway made a career of playing the girl-next-door on the silver screen. Only, she’s not a teenager anymore. Ready to challenge herself artistically and earn the part she’s always dreamed of, she’s forced to face the realization that in order to win the roles afforded to edgier actresses, she might first have to audition by playing someone edgier in her day-to-day life.

However, as she struggles to produce her next smash hit record, she’s finding it hard to keep her name in the public eye, and a string of tumultuous relationships with Hollywood boy-toys no longer captivates anyone’s attention.

Far From Home by Lorelie Brown

My name is Rachel. I’m straight . . . I think. I also have a mountain of student loans and a smart mouth. I wasn’t serious when I told Pari Sadashiv I’d marry her. It was only party banter! Except Pari needs a green card, and she’s willing to give me a breather from drowning in debt.

My off-the-cuff idea might not be so terrible. We get along as friends. She’s really romantically cautious, which I find heartbreaking. She deserves someone to laugh with. She’s kind. And calm. And gorgeous. A couple of years with her actually sounds pretty good. If some of Pari’s kindness and calm rubs off on me, that’d be a bonus, because I’m a mess—anorexia is not a pretty word—and my little ways of keeping control of myself, of the world, aren’t working anymore.

And if I slip up, Pari will see my cracks. Then I’ll crack. Which means I gotta get out, quick, before I fall in love with my wife.

  1. Great list! Some you missed, all of which are the “fake dating one person and falling for one of their relatives” like Just Kiss Her and Face It:
Make You Mine This Christmas by Lizzie Huxley Jones
The Christmas Swap by Talia Samuels
Home For The Holidays by Erin Zak
The Wrong MacElroy by KL Hughes
Anyone But Her by Erica Lee
Kiss Her Once For Me by Alison Cochrun

    1. All excellent suggestions! I left these out on purpose and included just books where the fake relationship is between the two main characters, not one of the main characters and a supporting character. Maybe I need to create an extra post for those!

      1. Ah right! You might want to remove Just Kiss Her by Clare Lydon and Face It by Georgette Kaplan from your list, then, because in both of those the main couple are not the ones in the fake relationship—both have one half of the main couple fake dating a relative of the other half of the main couple.

  2. Jae,
    Thanks for the great list!
Here are some additional books that could be included.

    • Champagne Kisses by M.J. Duncan
    • Fair Trade by Sienna Waters – This is a marriage of convenience for citizenship
    • Far From Home by Lorelie Brown – This is a marriage of convenience for citizenship
    • A Girlfriend for Christmas by Barbara Winkles
    • Holiday Escort by Julia P. Lynde
    • Triple Dog Dare by Georgia Beers

  3. I have read these fake dating books that are missing from the list:

The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of Clara Wild by Natasha West

Indecent Promposal by Natasha West (YA book)

    Just Married? by Natasha West

    Euphoria by Claire Highton-Stevenson

  4. Hi Jae,

I would add “The Christmas Committee” by Lily Seabrooke to the list. I’ve read it a dozen times since my first read. It’s in the same series as “A Little Christmas Magic” by Jacqueline Ramsden, which you have on your list, which is also excellent.
