Sapphic Slow-burn romances

Sapphic books with AAPI characters

sapphic books with AAPI characters

This week’s Sapphic Book Bingo post isn’t just a Hidden Gems category, it’s also a project that I’ve been working on for quite some time.

Instead of listing 15 recommended books, as I usually do for each Sapphic Book Bingo post, I put together a huge list of 150+ sapphic books featuring AAPI characters. You’ll find it below.

Important: For this category, not only should at least one of the book’s main characters be Asian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander, but the book should also be written by an AAPI author.

More sapphic books with AAPI main characters?

I’m sure there are even more sapphic books with AAPI characters, written by AAPI authors. If you know of any, please leave a comment or send me an email, and I’ll happily add it to the list. Before you email me, please check to make sure the book isn’t already on the list.

I also did my best to get all the information for every book on my list right, but of course I couldn’t read all 150+ books. If any of the information is incorrect, please let me know too and I’ll correct it right away.

Thank you!

Jae

  1. Three more PI authors who are writing sapphic main characters are Sascha Stronach, Gina Cole and Makana Yamamoto (I know this ones comes out really late in the year but it just sounds too good to leave it off this list).

And I wanted to say that the author of Dear Wendy as said it’s not really a sapphic book? It’s been labelled that by a lot of people but it features a queerplatonic relationship between a girl and a nonbinary person who both identify as aroace.

    • Thanks so much for these additions! I added books by the three authors you mentioned, including “Hammajang Luck” because it sounds so interesting!

I’ll keep Dear Wendy on the list because I think some of my readers will be interested in the book–it’s on my own reading list. I will add a remark to reflect what identities are represented in the book, though, so readers know what to expect.

  2. Thought I had this one filled in since the PDF form only says AAPI character. Used Patience & Esther, graphic novel for adults only, by S.W. Searle, but now don’t think this fits the whole category.

Great list, Jae! Highly recommend Malinda Lo, Nghi Vo, Tasha Suri and Maggie Tokuda-Hall as especial favorites to read. (And since you listed other sequels, The Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri was SO GOOD (and book 3 comes out this year!)

    • The form doesn’t leave much room to explain each category, but you’ll see a longer description of each category on the Book Bingo main page. If you click on the menu of my website, you’ll see it immediately.

  3. Technically Iron Widow isn’t sapphic, the relationship featured is FMM polyam and for a feminist book, it nevertheless has an underlying vibe of misogyny. Great list though, thank you so much for putting this together!

  4. Wow, Jae, you never cease to amaze me with your commitment to our sapphic community. Many thanks for all your work in compiling this extensive list. Not only have I found some new authors to pursue, I have learned of new ethnic identities, such as Desi and Tamil. My world is expanding, and I greatly appreciate your efforts.

  5. Amazing list, Jae! I’m not AAPI, but I love stories and characters from those cultures, so I’ll definitely keep coming back to this list 😄

As a curiosity, did you happen to find any Indonesian authors? One of my favourite characters ever is based on Indonesian culture and I’m studying the language, so I was looking for some sapphic books but couldn’t find any :(
