Lately, readers looking for sapphic fiction beyond Amazon have asked me for a list of sapphic books in Kobo Plus. As far as I know, no such list existed, so I decided to create one.
What is Kobo Plus?
Kobo Plus is a subscription service that allows readers to borrow ebooks (and audiobooks) for a monthly fee, much like Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited (KU).
Note: Not all books sold on Kobo are available in Kobo Plus—some authors sell their books on Kobo but choose not to include them in the subscription program, just like not all ebooks on Amazon are available in KU.
Advantages of Kobo Plus
For readers:
- Kobo Plus is slightly less expensive than Kindle Unlimited. Prices vary by country. In the US, Kobo’s ebooks-only subscription costs $7.99/month, and their ebooks & audiobooks option is $9.99/month, compared to KU’s $11.99/month.
- Kobo Plus has a dedicated audiobook subscription, while KU only includes a few select audiobooks that participate in “Kindle Unlimited with Audible Narration.”
- Kobo Plus is available in more countries than KU (22 vs. 12).
For authors:
- Kobo Plus doesn’t have an exclusivity clause, which gives authors the freedom to also offer their ebooks on other retailers or make them available through libraries and in their own webstores.
- Unlike KU, Kobo Plus pays authors for re-reads.
Disadvantages of Kobo Plus
For readers:
- Kobo Plus has a much smaller catalog, including fewer sapphic books, compared to Kindle Unlimited. Many sapphic indie authors put their ebooks in KU, which means they are contractually required to be exclusive with Amazon and can’t offer their ebooks in Kobo Plus.
- Some authors launch their books in KU and make them available via other retailers only after 3-6 months, which means Kobo Plus is less likely to have new releases.
For authors:
- Kobo has a much smaller reader base compared to Amazon and KU, so authors will reach a smaller audience.
- Putting an ebook into Kindle Unlimited increases its visibility on Amazon. Removing it from KU to enroll it in Kobo Plus means giving up that advantage.
- Kobo Plus doesn’t pay authors for books read by anyone using a 30-day free trial, while KU does.
Why did I put together this list of sapphic authors in Kobo Plus?
A quick note on the intention behind this list: It’s not a call to boycott Amazon—at least when it comes to buying sapphic books. Many indie authors are exclusive to Amazon, so boycotting Amazon entirely would mean missing out on the chance to read their ebooks and to support them.
This list is meant to highlight those authors who make their books available in Kobo Plus, giving readers more options to discover and support sapphic books across different platforms.
