Creating characters: Astrology II

You might have noticed that some people fit the description of their sun sign, while others don’t… at least at first glance. And no two people of the same sun sign are the same.

So let’s look at other astrological influences on your characters.

Moon sign:

moonMost people know their sun sign, but up until now, I had no clue that I have such a thing as a moon sign, much less what it is.

The moon represents your inner, more unconscious self, your emotions, needs, and instincts.

Depending on their moon sign, characters need different things:

Fire moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius moon) need freedom and acknowledgment; earth moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn moon) need stability; air moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius moon) need interaction and mental stimulation, and water moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces moon) need to serve others and need time to themselves to recharge.

While learned behavior might guide us most of the time, in times of stress our more instinctive, emotional side will affect our behavior. For example, an Aries moon might react with impulsive action when under pressure. I imagine a Cancer moon might react more like Dawn in Conflict of Interest — she might retreat to the kitchen and cook up a storm.

For fiction, moon signs can help you determine how your characters react under stress, and it can help you create interesting conflicts between what the character wants (sun sign) and what she needs (moon sign).

If you know your birth time, you can calculate your moon sign or read more on different moon signs here.

So, do you know what moon sign you are?
